‘Spring Awakening’ Returns to Off-Broadway: Lead Cast of New Production Revealed

The lead cast of the highly anticipated Off-Broadway revival of the Tony-winning musical “Spring Awakening” has been revealed. Tyler Jordan Wesley will play Melchior, Ashlyn Maddox will interpret Wendla, Ryo Kamibayashi Moritz and Amalia Yoo Ilse, it was announced last night.

The cast is also joined by Jack Bateman as Georg, Jada Simone Clark as Thea, Leif Coomer as Ernst, Nando Morland as Otto, Antonio Porciello as Hanschen, Khadija Sankoh as Martha, Grace Slear as Anna. Two of the actors, Bateman and Porciello, were selected from the open auditions in July, which drew 2,532 actors.

The production will be staged by Danya Taymor, Tony winner for directing “The Outsiders,” with choreography by Celia Rowlson-Hall and music supervision by Or Matias. Previews begin November 27 at Studio Seaview, opening night is set for December 17, and the production will run through February 14, 2027.

“Spring Awakening,” with a book by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik, first appeared Off-Broadway in 2006, before moving to Broadway that same year, where it became a major success and launched the careers of then-unknown actors Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele and John Gallagher Jr. The musical returned to Broadway in 2015 through the Deaf West theatre.

Also announced for this production is the ticket policy: $40 front-row “rush” tickets will be available on the day of each preview, as well as a $40 lottery through the TodayTix app. There will be three accessible performances: with open captions on January 13, with audio description on January 20 and in sign language (ASL) on January 27.
