Tajani: Italy strongly backs Montenegro in the final stretch of its EU path
Italy strongly supports Montenegro’s European path, which Rome says is ready for European Union membership, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said today in Trieste. According to him, the enlargement process must be accelerated to preserve momentum in the Western Balkans.
The remarks were made during Tajani’s meeting with Montenegrin Foreign Minister Ervin Ibrahimović, where the final stage of Montenegro’s EU negotiations, bilateral relations and regional stability were discussed.
“Montenegro’s EU membership would be a significant contribution to strengthening European security,” Tajani said, highlighting the strong ties between the two countries, including NATO membership and the connection across the Adriatic Sea.
Ibrahimović thanked Italy for its continued political and expert support, especially in the field of the rule of law, saying Montenegro is in the final phase of negotiations and needs strong partners to turn reforms into membership. The meeting also discussed the ministerial meeting of the Berlin Process on October 1 in Montenegro.
