Tate Modern announces its first-ever Monet exhibition: “Monet: Painting Time” opens in London in February 2027

Tate Modern in London has announced its first-ever exhibition devoted to Claude Monet: “Monet: Painting Time”, which will be open from 25 February to 27 June 2027. The historic exhibition comes a century after the death of the great impressionist (1926–2026) and promises a rare reassessment of his oeuvre in one of the world’s most renowned museums of modern art.

Conceived around the theme of time, the exhibition spans a full 60 years of Monet’s career, from the 1870s to the 1920s. Visitors will follow how the artist captured the fleeting moment with rapid brushstrokes, precisely in a century when modernity was accelerating at a dizzying pace — railways, industrialization and the standardization of time zones were forever changing humanity’s relationship with time.

Among the exhibition’s highlights is the famous Rouen Cathedral series, including “Cathédrale de Rouen, effet de soleil, fin de journée” (1892), as well as several of his Grainstacks (1890–91), among them “Grainstack in the Sunlight, Snow Effect” (1891) from the Hasso Plattner Collection (Museum Barberini) — the lead photograph of this article. Also part of the exhibition are “Arrival of the Normandy Train, Gare Saint-Lazare” (1877) from the Art Institute of Chicago, London views such as “Waterloo Bridge, London, at Dusk” (1904) and “Charing Cross Bridge, Smoke in Fog, Impression” (1902), as well as winter landscapes of the Seine such as “The Break-up of Ice on the Seine” (1880–81) from the Oskar Reinhart Collection in Winterthur.

At the end of the journey, visitors will enter a final immersive video room: “(D)Après Monet 2020” by contemporary French artist Ange Leccia, a response to Monet’s Water Lilies at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris.

“We think we know Monet, but do we really look anymore? This exhibition aims to look anew at the artist’s sensitivity towards the time he lived through and its shifting technology…” — says Katherine Wood, interim director of Tate Modern. While curator Juliet Bingham (Curator of International Art, Tate) adds: “Themed around time, this exhibition proposes slow looking and a refuge for peaceful meditation.”
