The J.J. McCarthy trade: did the Vikings benefit from the Giants’ desperation?
The Minnesota Vikings traded quarterback J.J. McCarthy to the New York Giants, receiving in return a fifth-round pick in the 2027 draft. The move came at a moment when the Giants were left without starter Jaxson Dart for the regular season after knee surgery, while backup Jameis Winston has shown shaky performances in the first two games. New head coach John Harbaugh appears eager to address the uncertainty at the quarterback position while the team still aims to stay competitive for the 2026 season.
As NFL media report, McCarthy was a first-round pick by the Vikings in 2024, but dealt with injury problems and performance inconsistency that prevented him from establishing himself as a starter. After Kyler Murray won the starting competition early in training camp, Minnesota chose Carson Wentz as backup, which left McCarthy out of the short-term plans. For New York, the trade was graded C+: it’s a challenge for any young quarterback to integrate into a team after the season has begun and learn a new scheme, but the fact that he was a first-round pick points to the existence of potential. The Giants also tracked McCarthy closely during the 2024 pre-draft process before selecting wide receiver Malik Nabers with the sixth pick, and general manager Joe Schoen has deep knowledge of the player’s strengths and weaknesses.
The grade for the Vikings was B-. General manager Nolan Teasley, appointed in June and who had not drafted McCarthy, faced the decision of keeping him as a development project or converting him into immediate value. By selling in-season, the organization managed to extract value that would have diminished over time had the player not played; thus, the Vikings avoided the investment becoming a total loss and closed out a project with small chances of turning into the expected starter.
According to NFL media, these moves reflect Minnesota’s preference to close the chapter with McCarthy and secure something for his remaining value, while New York got a quarterback with potential who must adapt quickly to help the team as the season continues.
