Kreni-promeni calls protest in Belgrade after release of mayor Šapić, accused of breaking an opposition councillor’s nose
The opposition movement “Kreni-promeni” announced, as the newspaper Danas reports, that it will hold a protest today at 2:00 p.m. in front of the Third Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office at Mihajlo Pupin Boulevard 16 in New Belgrade, over the release of Belgrade mayor Aleksandar Šapić — accused of breaking the nose of the movement’s councillor, Tanja Mićić, during an incident on the evening of September 28.
According to the movement’s announcement, after the clash police escorted Šapić to the New Belgrade police station but released him after only 15 minutes — without testing him for alcohol or psychoactive substances, even though he was “clearly not himself,” the movement’s leader Savo Manojlović declared last night before citizens gathered in front of the police station.
“Kreni-promeni” warned it will not stop until the name of the prosecutor who ordered the mayor’s release is made public and until, as the statement says, “justice is served.” The movement announced it will file a criminal complaint and demands Šapić’s immediate arrest.
The original incident happened on the evening of September 28: Mićić says she was walking with her husband and dog when Šapić approached her, accusing her of bringing protesters to his home; she claims he broke her nose after she stepped between him and her husband. This new development — the protest and the call for arrest — follows the publication of the news about the incident itself.
