“The majority hasn’t wavered” — Edmond Spaho: The opposition only makes noise in Parliament; a prime minister resigns when his majority wavers

Edmond Spaho, former Democratic Party MP and former deputy speaker of Parliament, commenting on this morning’s National Security Council meeting following the Vlora Hyseni case, said he does not understand the opposition’s stance in demanding the prime minister’s resignation.

According to him, the opposition has turned the debate on the issue into a political war.

“The National Security Council is a consultative body, not a decision-making one. It was natural for this meeting to be held after the Hyseni case. Guidelines are issued, and this shows these events are serious and must not happen. The case burdens the government with responsibility, but I don’t understand the opposition’s stance. Opposition leaders said today, ‘why is the Council meeting — they serve the prime minister.’ These are the opposition’s acrobatics, and such things don’t suit them. The opposition has a duty to offer its perspective on how to prevent such events in the future. But the opposition steers the entire debate into the spectrum of political warfare, as if to come to power an hour sooner,” Spaho said.

He added that the prime minister could resign if his parliamentary majority wavers — but that hasn’t happened.

“A prime minister resigns if his majority in Parliament wavers, and there is no sign that this majority has wavered. The question is why the opposition is unable to force the prime minister’s resignation — that is their inability when such events occur, it is incompetence,” Spaho said.

He added that the opposition has no chance of returning to power because citizens have lost faith in a party led for 35 years by the same man.

“There is no question of the opposition returning to power, because citizens have lost faith in it — how can they trust it when the same man has been at its helm for 35 years, not even holding elections, let alone for its chairman? How can you trust a political force that only makes noise in Parliament? People watch and reflect. Sitting and waiting for the prime minister’s resignation is illogical on the opposition’s part. The Democratic Party must be completely overhauled,” Spaho concluded.
