“The reaction on Hyseni was immediate,” Basha says: Rama has no reason to resign
Security expert Faik Basha, a guest on the “3D” show on RTSH, said Albania’s progress toward European Union membership is a clear indicator of the functioning of institutions and the government’s dedication. In his view, advancing in this process requires continuous work and committed leadership.
During the discussion, Basha also addressed the public debate over calls for Prime Minister Edi Rama’s resignation, describing them as baseless claims created for attention on social media. He underlined that the majority has been the main driver of justice reform and the creation of the Special Prosecution (SPAK), fully aware that this institution would investigate senior officials without exception.
“When Mr. Rama floated this idea of creating this institution, he was fully aware that this institution would judge and investigate high personalities of this country, who hold or have held posts in this state. He was fully aware that SPAK would investigate both within this majority and outside it,” Basha said.
Separation of powers and managing investigations against officials
In his analysis, Basha drew a distinction between the treatment of officials with a public mandate and those without parliamentary immunity when facing investigative processes. He pointed to the case of former deputy prime minister Belinda Balluku, who left her executive posts while the investigation continues.
“Mrs. Balluku resigned from the post of deputy prime minister and from the minister’s post; she is under investigation and retains only her MP mandate. I believe the clash over the issue of separated powers went this far — the idea that ‘you cannot compose my government for me, but I have created the mechanisms for you and done everything so that you investigate freely, calmly and without obstacles in your duty. While for persons who do not have immunity there is only one reaction: the moment you are taken under investigation by this structure, you must immediately leave the duty and function you hold, and this reaction of the prime minister was immediate,'” the security expert stated.
On the government’s stances regarding the data leak, Basha clarified that the concern raised was not addressed directly to the Special Structure, but related to the need to address the phenomenon of secret information being leaked into the public domain.
