Trump: Iran Wants a Deal with the U.S., but the Decision Is Mine

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that Iran wants to reach a deal with Washington as soon as possible, while stressing that he will decide whether the U.S. engages in negotiations with Tehran.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote that the “failed nation of Iran wants to make a deal, quickly and wholeheartedly.” He added that he himself would determine whether the United States chooses to engage, stressing that Washington is open to the possibility.

The statement comes amid high tensions between the U.S., Israel and Iran. In February, the U.S. and Israel launched strikes against targets in Iran, while Tehran retaliated with attacks on Israel and U.S. military targets in the region.

In June, Washington and Tehran reached an understanding mediated by Pakistan and Qatar. However, implementation of the agreement was later blocked due to disagreements over the Strait of Hormuz.

In August, the U.S. resumed military strikes against Iran, while Tehran responded by hitting U.S. military assets in several Arab countries allied with Washington.

Trump’s new statement signals the possibility of a return of contacts between the two countries, but the American president gave no details on possible conditions or deadlines for an agreement.
