‘Trump is right, AI development must not stop’ — Rama at the UN: But we need verifiable Artificial Intelligence
Prime Minister Edi Rama told the UN General Assembly hall in New York today that US President Donald Trump was right to say that Artificial Intelligence must not be stopped.
But he added that AI must be controlled, monitored and transparent, so it does not obey the wrong people who might control it.
Rama’s speech:
“A moratorium respected by responsible states will not deter hostile powers, international criminal networks or manipulation industries.
We cannot regulate ourselves to the point of becoming powerless.
On this fundamental strategic matter, the President of the United States is right. We cannot stop. We must accelerate.
But acceleration must have a direction.
We need verifiable, transparent and accountable artificial intelligence, built by free societies, shared among allies and deployed in the service of citizens.
The answer to automation weaponized is not technological surrender. It is democratic capacity. It is sovereign capability. It is better artificial intelligence, in the hands of those who remain accountable before the law of the land.
Sovereign artificial intelligence does not mean isolation. It means that no state should be powerless before systems it cannot understand, cannot inspect and, even less, cannot challenge.
Every country must be able to protect its language, authenticate public communications, detect coordinated manipulation, preserve evidence and inform its citizens.”
