U.S. — Supreme Court allows deportation of migrants to third countries
WASHINGTON, September 30 /ATSH-DPA/ – The U.S. Supreme Court has temporarily given the administration of President Donald Trump the ability to continue deporting migrants to countries that are not their countries of origin. The decision temporarily suspends a lower court’s ruling, while the case will be examined in full in December, when the parties will present their arguments before a final decision is taken.
At the centre of the case is the question of whether the U.S. can deport migrants to a third country without first giving them the opportunity to challenge that destination. The Trump administration has reached agreements with several host countries, mainly in Africa and Latin America, to accept people deported from the U.S.
According to the non-partisan Migration Policy Institute, around 15,000 people were deported to third countries during the period January 20 – December 31, 2025, the overwhelming majority of them to Mexico. In February, a federal judge ordered a temporary halt to this practice, requiring that migrants be given the opportunity to challenge the country they would be sent to, in particular to avoid the risk of torture or persecution. /Ad.Ab./ a.jor.
