UNICEF: Nine Children Killed and 104,000 People Displaced in Yemen in Two Weeks
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says at least nine children have been killed in Yemen over the past two weeks, while the escalation of the conflict between the Houthis and Saudi-backed government forces has displaced thousands.
“Renewed fighting across Yemen is forcing families to flee their homes, killing and injuring children and weighing heavily on the fragile systems they depend on,” said UNICEF’s regional director for the Middle East and North Africa, Edouard Beigbeder, in a statement.
The UN agency said services at 26 UNICEF-supported health facilities have been interrupted and 243 schools have been closed since September 4.
The data comes as the UN reports over 125,000 displaced by the fighting in Yemen and Médecins Sans Frontières warns the conflict risks pushing Yemen’s health system “beyond the point of recovery.”
