‘We don’t comment on ongoing cases’ – Brussels reacts to the ‘Hyseni’ affair: we are following developments
The European Commission was asked about the scandal involving SHISH and the ‘house arrest’ measure against Vlora Hyseni.
Spokesperson Guillaume Mercier declined to comment on the specific case.
He expressed full confidence in the Special Prosecution’s ability to investigate and prosecute organized crime.
‘We do not comment on cases that are in process, but what we can say is that we follow closely developments related to the rule of law, particularly reforms in justice and the fight against organized crime and corruption, fields in which Albania has made considerable progress,’ Mercier said.
After declining to speak about the file, Mercier gave the message of confidence in the institution investigating it:
‘We have full confidence in the ability of the Special Structure Against Corruption and Organized Crime, known as SPAK, to detect, investigate and prosecute organized crime.’
The spokesperson added that communication with Albanian authorities continues:
‘In a broader perspective, we are always in contact with Albanian counterparts.’
As for the European Commission’s broader assessment of the situation, Mercier referred to the upcoming enlargement report:
‘As for our assessment of the situation, you know that the enlargement report will be published in the coming weeks.’
