Which “non-paper” will define the new path to the EU? Austrian ambassador speaks ahead of September 30

It is still unknown which of the proposals for the new model of gradual integration of Western Balkan countries into the European Union will be accepted, the Austrian ambassador in Skopje, Martin Pamer, said ahead of September 30 — the date when new steps in the enlargement process are expected from the European Commission.

According to Pamer, several documents known as “non-papers” on the future of enlargement are circulating in Brussels, but it is currently unclear which of them will define the new path toward the EU for the region’s countries.

North Macedonia has waited years for the full opening of EU accession negotiations because of the dispute with Bulgaria, while the “gradual integration” model is being discussed as a way to bring the region closer to the EU market and institutions even before full membership.
