Xhemajli recalls Flora Brovina’s imprisonment and suffering: She did not let prison break her spirit — on the contrary, suffering strengthened her character
At the commemorative gathering in honor of Flora Brovina, Bajrush Xhemajli, representative of the Association of Political Prisoners and the “Lëvizja” Society, also spoke.
Xhemajli praised Brovina’s figure, saying she is associated with dignity, resilience and sacrifice, while also recalling the period of her imprisonment.
“On behalf of the Association of Political Prisoners I have the honor to say a few words about doctor Flora, a name associated with dignity, resilience and sacrifice… For her patriotic liberation activity, Flora was arrested, imprisoned and sentenced to 12 years in prison. Therefore, the calvary of her suffering was endless. Separation from her children and family, in the cold cells of Kosovo’s prisons and then transfer to Serbian prisons, first to Požarevac and then to Niš.
In these prisons, as she herself would testify after her liberation, she was kept in isolation for most of her sentence. Despite these created circumstances, the doctor found the courage to stoically face all physical and spiritual suffering, without fear and with dignity. She did not let prison break her spirit; on the contrary, suffering strengthened her character. She was aware that she was in a cell not because she had committed a crime, but because her freedom as an Albanian was denied, because of her convictions and stances toward the occupier. After liberation, there was an amnesty of prisoners and doctor Flora was also released,” Xhemajli said.
Flora Brovina’s funeral takes place today, September 18 in Arbëri in Prishtina, at 16:00.
