Shqipe Mehmeti-Selimi seeks an investigation into the call for the execution of Rexhep Selimi

The member of the Assembly of Kosovo, Shqipe Mehmeti-Selimi, has reacted after the publication of a comment on social networks in which, as she said, there is a direct call for the execution of her husband, Rexhep Selimi.

Mehmeti-Selimi has asked the State Prosecution to handle the case and take the necessary actions to identify the person standing behind the comment.

She said that such a call must not pass without being handled by the responsible institutions.

“Today, through reports in the written media, I was informed of a public comment on social networks, in which a direct call is made for the execution of my husband, Rexhep Selimi,” Mehmeti-Selimi wrote.

She described the case as “extremely serious”, stressing that political disagreements or personal beliefs cannot be used as a justification for public calls for the killing of a person.

“Freedom of expression cannot be used as a cover for inciting violence,” she declared.

The deputy called on the State Prosecution, within its competences, to investigate the case, identify the person behind the comment and assess whether there is criminal responsibility.

“I ask for nothing more and nothing less than the implementation of the law and the handling, with the proper seriousness, of a public call for taking a human life,” she wrote.

In her reaction, Mehmeti-Selimi said that silence and the normalisation of such language are unacceptable and that the justice institutions must ensure that such cases are handled in accordance with the law.

Rexhep Selimi, a former member and one of the leaders of the KLA, has been sentenced by the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague at first instance to 13 years in prison, as Telegrafi reports.
