Yvan Cournoyer and the Stanley Cup Bring Excitement Back to Hockeyville in Saint-Boniface

Yvan Cournoyer, the Montreal Canadiens legend and Hockey Hall of Fame member, visited Saint-Boniface with the Stanley Cup ahead of the preseason game between the Canadiens and the Senators at the Colisée Videotron in Trois-Rivières. The 82-year-old, known as one of the protagonists of the Canadiens’ dominant era in the 1960s and 1970s, has continued to serve as an ambassador for the club and to devote time and dedication to the communities that host such events.

According to the NHL, the efforts of Saint-Boniface residents were rewarded with $250,000 for upgrades to the Arena de Saint-Boniface ice rink and $10,000 in hockey equipment, part of the NHLPA Goals & Dreams program and the NHL/NHLPA Industry Growth Fund. The local organizing committee said the initiative required major efforts from the entire region to bring Hockeyville to Quebec for the first time since Roberval in 2008.

Cournoyer was warmly welcomed by residents and fans, who took the opportunity to be photographed with the trophy and exchange greetings. The former winger, who won ten Stanley Cups during his career and is on the list of the NHL’s 100 greatest players, said he was pleased that trophies and well-known figures inspire local communities.

The visit took place on the eve of the preseason game between the Canadiens and the Senators, and the Hockeyville organization was seen as a boost for local hockey investment and development, as well as a chance to create lasting memories for residents of a community located about two hours from Montreal.

According to the NHL, events like these that bring the Stanley Cup and legendary former players give small communities unforgettable experiences and strengthen their bond with the sport.
