47-Year-Old Sentenced to 15 Years in Albania Arrested in Italy

Italian authorities have arrested Alok Mittra, 47, who was wanted by Albanian justice. He is expected to be extradited to Albania, after being sentenced in 2024 to 15 years in prison by the Special Court.

Mittra was convicted of the criminal offenses of “aiding illegal border crossing,” “forgery of documents,” “structured criminal group” and “commission of criminal offenses by a criminal organization and structured criminal group.”

According to the investigations, the 47-year-old was part of a criminal group that, over a roughly six-month period in 2023–2024, organized the illegal passage of around 253 Bangladeshi citizens to European Union countries.

The Bangladeshi citizens, according to police, were first brought to Albania from Dubai. Then, through fictitious work contracts, they were provided with Albanian residence permits and used these documents to continue their journey to EU countries.

In this scheme, Mittra is suspected of having a role in escorting, transporting and accommodating the foreign citizens during their movement.

The arrest of the 47-year-old in Italy paves the way for procedures to extradite him to Albania, where he must serve the sentence handed down by the Special Court.
