Angel Reese Makes WNBA History: Reaches 500 Rebounds in a Single Season
Angel Reese, the Atlanta Dream star, made history during Saturday’s game against the Chicago Sky, recording her 500th rebound of the season in the first half and becoming the first player in WNBA history to reach that mark within a single season.
As Bleacher Report notes, she had earlier set the single-season rebound record during Atlanta’s 78-71 win over the Los Angeles Sparks on August 24.
Reese is enjoying an extraordinary season: before Saturday’s game she averaged a career-high 16.5 points and led the league with 12.4 rebounds per game across 40 appearances. In that stretch she also averaged 2.8 assists, 1.8 steals and 0.7 blocks per game. On August 30 she also set the WNBA record for double-doubles in a season, with 29.
The 24-year-old has been the anchor of the Dream’s frontcourt, which currently holds a 27-14 record and ranks fourth in the standings, with the playoffs approaching. According to WNBA.com data, Atlanta has a net rating of +10.2 with Reese on the floor, compared with +0.2 when she is out.
With the playoffs approaching, Angel Reese’s season is already considered unforgettable; Bleacher Report notes that her achievements have clearly influenced the team’s performance and set new standards for the position.
