Around 2.8 million Volkswagen and Audi vehicles at risk of steering defect

Around 2.86 million Volkswagen and Audi vehicles worldwide may have a problem with the steering system, according to Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA).

The problem relates to a screw that secures the steering mechanism. Under certain conditions, corrosion can cause it to break and, in the worst case, lead to loss of steering control, increasing the risk of accidents.

Affected models include the Audi Q3, as well as the Volkswagen Golf, Tiguan, Touran and Caddy. Audi has launched a preliminary recall and announced that the repair will be carried out free of charge and may take up to an hour.

According to the data, around 2.16 million Volkswagen vehicles and more than 696,000 Audi vehicles worldwide are potentially affected. The KBA still has the case “under investigation,” while the final assessment is expected to determine further measures.

Owners who suspect their vehicle may be affected can contact an authorized service center using the vehicle identification number (VIN).
