“Avengers: Endgame” retakes the all-time box office record from “Avatar”: $2.92 billion
“Avengers: Endgame” has officially retaken the all-time box office record from “Avatar,” taking the film’s lifetime global gross to $2.92 billion, as TheWrap reports.
The re-release titled “Avengers: Endgame Encore,” which stayed in cinemas for two extra weeks, added $126 million to the total — $36.2 million in America and $89.8 million outside it. According to the American outlet, the new version arrives with a modified ending and three new mid/post-credits scenes, directly linked to “Avengers: Doomsday,” which comes out in December this year.
Meanwhile, the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise has passed $35 billion in total gross since 2008’s “Iron Man,” consolidating its status as the most profitable franchise in history.
Attention is now on “Avengers: Doomsday,” which arrives in December and has accumulated approximately $60 million in pre-sold tickets. Disney and Marvel are accompanying the film with the “Infinity Vision” campaign — the film will not be shown in IMAX for at least the first three weeks, while 70% of presales have come precisely through this campaign.
The industry context is just as significant: according to a Cinema United report, cinemas have spent $2.7 billion on renovations over the last two years, a strong signal of audiences returning to theatres.
