Honda plans to test wireless charging for moving trucks on a Japanese expressway
Japanese carmaker Honda Motor said on Monday that it has developed technology that can wirelessly charge electric vehicles, including large trucks, while they are moving, as Reuters reports, and plans to test it on a Japanese expressway.
According to Reuters, Honda plans to test the technology together with the construction firm Taisei and the road builder Taisei Rotec in the financial year starting in April 2027 or later.
The system, developed by Honda’s research arm with the two partner firms, aims to transfer electrical energy wirelessly from charging units embedded in the road to moving vehicles — a development that, as Reuters stresses, could lead to fewer charging stops during travel.
A Honda engineer declined to comment on the cost compared with a conventional high-speed charging network, saying that the technology’s economic viability would have to be assessed, Reuters reports.
