“Battlefield” heads to Hollywood: Sony leads the race for the film, with Christopher McQuarrie directing and Michael B. Jordan producing
“Battlefield”, Electronic Arts’ legendary video game series, is approaching the big screen: Sony Pictures has emerged as the frontrunner and is in talks to acquire the live-action film package that came to market last spring, as TheWrap exclusively announces.
Director Christopher McQuarrie (“Mission: Impossible”) will write, direct and produce the adaptation of EA’s best-selling military series, while Michael B. Jordan, the Oscar winner for “Sinners”, is attached as a producer and may play the lead role. The producing team also includes Jesse Stern of Electronic Arts, Carter Swan of Emerald Neon, Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo, and Elizabeth Raposo of Outlier Society.
The race has been fierce: according to TheWrap, Warner Bros. Discovery, Amazon MGM Studios, Universal and Netflix all submitted bids, making this “the biggest bidding war of the year” in Hollywood. The news was also confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, while Sony declined to comment on the talks — so the deal is not yet closed.
The timing is no accident. “Battlefield 6” became the best-selling game of 2025 in the U.S., with over 7 million copies sold in the first three days — the biggest success in the history of the franchise, which began in 2002 with “Battlefield 1942”. Hollywood is thus continuing its run of video game adaptations: old rival “Call of Duty” is being made into a film by Paramount (with a release date of June 30, 2028), while Illumination, Nintendo and Universal’s “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is the biggest film of 2026 so far, with $764 million worldwide.
