Kurti congratulates Germany on Unity Day: the struggle between democracies and autocracies is not over

Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti has congratulated Germany on Unity Day, which is marked on October 3, describing German reunification as an important chapter in the modern political history of Europe.

Kurti, in a Facebook post, recalled that on October 3, 1990 Germany formally reunified, following the accession of the German Democratic Republic to the Federal Republic of Germany, around a year after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

He also mentioned the history of Germany’s division after the end of the Second World War and the clash between the Western and Eastern blocs during the Cold War.

According to Kurti, German territory had been turned into a battlefield of political clashes with global reach, while Germany’s reunification was one of the important political outcomes of the end of the Cold War.

“The unification of Germany in 1990 is a very important chapter in the modern political history of Europe, in which we read the victory of democracy over authoritarian regimes, but in which we also see the reference of the example of the peace-building and prosperous power of political and national unification,” Kurti wrote.

He stressed that the clash between democracies and autocracies continues today as well.

“But the struggle between democracies and autocracies has not ended, as the battles between them take place every day along a long front line from Russia to Ukraine and from Great Britain to the countries of the European Union, from the U.S. to Turkey and from the Atlantic to the Balkans,” Kurti declared.

Finally, the prime minister placed emphasis on the importance of history in political decision-making.

“Because politics without history is blind, while political aspirations without clear memory and high awareness cannot be steered in the right directions and at the right speeds to realise political wills,” he concluded, as Telegrafi reports.
