Belgrade prosecution opens investigation into Šapić incident: mayor held overnight at police, alleged victims unavailable
The Third Basic Public Prosecution in Belgrade has ordered police to collect information on the September 28 incident involving “Kreni-promeni” councilor Tatjana Mićić, her husband, and Belgrade mayor Aleksandar Šapić, as Newsmax Balkans reports.
According to the outlet, Šapić was held overnight at the police station and released this morning by order of the prosecutor, while the criminal qualification of the act will be determined later by the prosecution. The prosecution said the injured parties were unavailable to police during the night — they did not answer their phones and were not found at their address — stressing that “the cooperation of the injured parties was completely absent.”
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić also reacted to the case, saying there is “no justification for what he did,” adding that Šapić should have walked away and that as a public official he must not have allowed such a thing. According to Newsmax Balkans, drug and alcohol tests came back negative and the mayor was questioned.
The incident occurred on September 28 in New Belgrade, where the “Kreni-promeni” movement claims Šapić attacked the councilor while she was walking with her husband and dog; a medical examination found a fracture of the left nasal bone and part of the upper jaw. Šapić denies the attack, saying he pushed the councilor to defend himself from her husband; he apologized to SNS and Vučić but is not resigning, while the opposition demands his dismissal.
