Best and Worst Additions After Week 1 of the American Football Season

After Week 1 of the season, many of the summer signings and trades are already showing their impact on the field. Some summer acquisitions immediately became added strength for their teams, while others failed to produce a visible impact in their official debuts.

As the NFL reports, among the arrivals that look most successful are Kenneth Walker with Kansas City, who posted 173 yards on 23 attempts and scored a 60-yard touchdown; tight end Isaiah Likely with the New York Giants, who debuted with eight catches, 78 yards and two touchdowns; and center Tyler Linderbaum with Las Vegas, who dominated the interior in his debut. Also, Cincinnati’s three key defensive additions — including Dexter Lawrence, Boye Mafe and Bryan Cook — played decisive roles in the win, with pressures, forced fumbles and recoveries that changed the direction of the game. Among other arrivals who shone were Dylan Parham with the New York Jets, Kwity Paye with the Raiders, Trey Hendrickson with Baltimore and Roy Lopez with Arizona, all contributing in visible ways in the season’s opening episodes.

Some of the positive performances appear to have transformed the way their teams play. Walker brought an explosive element to the Chiefs’ offense, while Linderbaum changed the dynamics of the Raiders’ offensive line in both phases, data expected to give these teams advantages when they face stronger fronts in the coming weeks. The Bengals’ success on the defensive end showed that some market moves can have an immediate impact when new pieces quickly adapt to existing schemes.

On the other hand, some signings failed to deliver the expected results. Devin Lloyd with the Carolina Panthers had a difficult debut in a game in which the team conceded 59 points and opponents gained 291 rushing yards. Odafe Oweh with Washington was not productive in the daily pace of pressure, while Romeo Doubs with New England had a poor start with zero catches on three targets and a decisive mistake at a key moment — moreover, his partner A.J. Brown was sidelined for several games due to injury. Myles Garrett, despite the budget and expectations after the transfer, was injured and placed on the injured list, while John Franklin-Myers with Tennessee did not influence as expected in either phase of the game.

According to the NFL, these performances represent only a starting point; as the weeks go by it will become clear which signings will have a lasting impact and which will remain disappointing, as coaches and tactical staffs adapt the use of new players to maximize results.
