Cubs’ Alex Bregman Taken to Hospital After Being Hit in the Face by a Foul Ball

Alex Bregman, the Chicago Cubs’ third baseman, was forced to leave Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds after being hit in the face by a foul ball while standing on deck. Bregman later posted a photograph of the wound showing the injury.

According to Bleacher Report, the incident happened in the fourth inning while Michael Busch was batting against Reds pitcher Luis Mey. Bregman immediately ran toward the team tunnel with his hand over his left eye, was accompanied by an athletic trainer to the locker rooms and had blood on his face. Manager Craig Counsell told reporters the player had suffered a cut under his left eye, had a bit of blood coming from his nose and his face looked swollen; Bregman was later taken to hospital for further testing. He also gave an update on Monday morning, after returning to Chicago.

Before leaving, Bregman had opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning and had taken a walk in the third, later coming around to score after Pedro Ramirez’s two-run single. Matt Shaw replaced him as a pinch-hit and finished 0-for-2. Pete Crow-Armstrong hit a two-run homer that led the 9-1 win, while starter David Peterson delivered six strong innings with seven strikeouts. Bregman signed with the Cubs in January on a five-year, $175 million contract; a three-time All-Star, he trails Crow-Armstrong on the team with 26 home runs and 89 RBIs.
