Dominique Morisseau’s “Pipeline” opens Vanguard Theater’s 10th anniversary season: a drama about a mother, a son and difficult choices
The Vanguard Theater in Montclair, New Jersey, begins the second decade of its life with Dominique Morisseau’s play “Pipeline” — a moving and deeply human story about a mother, her son and the difficult choices families make as they try to give their children every chance of success, as BroadwayWorld reports.
At the centre of the play is Nya, a devoted public-school teacher who makes a difficult decision for her only son, Omari: she sends him to a private school, in the hope that the opportunity will open the door to a better future. But when a confrontation with a teacher at Omari’s school turns physical, his education and his future are suddenly put at risk. As Nya tries to understand what happened and what comes next, the play touches on deep questions about race and class, public and private education, parenting, anger, responsibility and the enormous pressure weighing on young people.
The production is directed by Marshall Jones III, whose career has moved between professional theatre and higher education — for 21 years he directed the theatre programme at Rutgers University and for 13 seasons served as artistic director of the Tony Award-winning Crossroads Theatre Company; “Pipeline” is the fourth Morisseau play he has directed. The cast includes Doreen Oliver (Nya), Ja’Quan Spann (Omari), Keivana Wallace (Jasmine), Lazarus Simmons (Xavier), Rebecca Hart (Laurie) and Jamal Guye (Dun). Performances run from October 8 to 25, 2026 at the Vanguard Theater, 180 Bloomfield Avenue, Montclair; tickets start at $25.
“Pipeline” opens the four-production season “MORE TO THE STORY: A Season of Hope, Resilience, Humanity, and Second Chances” — which continues with “Annie”, Lynn Nottage’s “Clyde’s” and “Jesus Christ Superstar”. Morisseau, the Detroit playwright and MacArthur Fellow (2018), is one of the leading voices of contemporary American theatre, with works such as “Detroit ’67”, “Paradise Blue”, “Skeleton Crew” and “Sunset Baby”, as well as the Tony-nominated book for the musical “Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations”; “Pipeline” was first staged at Lincoln Center Theater in 2017.
