Mfoniso Udofia’s “Creation Stories” officially opens Off-Broadway: critics welcome the new play at Lincoln Center Theater
“creation stories and all the important importants” officially opened on 1 October at Lincoln Center Theater’s Claire Tow Theater, as Playbill announces, and American critics have already begun to give their first assessments of the newest play by the Nigerian-American playwright Mfoniso Udofia.
The play, part of the LCT3 series, follows a middle-aged Black woman split among many versions of herself — the child, the future daughter, the artist, the possible mother — moving in time and space, according to Playbill, from ancestors to artificial intelligence, from the dream cycle to the IVF cycle, through music and ritual.
On stage are Savannah Commodore in the role of the Little Girl, Donnetta Lavinia Grays as Alexa and Mr Cornell, and Abigail Onwunali as the Grown Woman and Raffia. The cast was selected by The Telsey Office, while the creative team is completed by names such as Jason Ardizzone-West (set design), Sarafina Bush (costumes) and Alan C. Edwards (lighting).
“Playbill will continue to update the list as the reviews arrive”, writes the American theatre magazine, listing the reviews published so far by The New York Times, Vulture, CultureSauce, New York Theatre Guide and others. The play will remain on stage until 1 November.
