Trump publishes Republican Senator Tom Cotton’s cell phone number to pressure him over permanent daylight saving time
President Donald Trump appears to have published what he says is the personal cell phone number of Republican Senator Tom Cotton, in an attempt to pressure him to support legislation that would make daylight saving time permanent, as USA Today reports.
“Call Tom on his cell phone,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on October 3, calling on Arkansas residents to phone their senator personally. After writing the number, Trump continued: “let him know. The ‘Sunshine Protection Act’ passed the House by a vote of 308 to 117. PUT THE VOTE IN THE SENATE, NOW!”
It is not confirmed whether the number posted by Trump really belongs to the senator. USA Today tried to call and text the number, but the messages were not delivered; the White House has not responded to a request for comment.
It is not the first time Trump has released another senator’s phone number. In his 2015 campaign, Trump told attendees in South Carolina to call their senator, the now late Lindsey Graham, and gave them his number. Graham, who was also running for president at the time, was a fierce critic of Trump in the first presidential campaign. “Try it,” Trump told those present. “Your local politician, you know? He won’t fix anything, but at least he will talk to you.” Graham responded with a post: “Probably getting a new phone. iPhone or Android?”
Trump has long demanded an end to clock changes and permanent daylight saving time. On October 2 he posted a message asking Republican senators to pass the “Stop Changing the Clock Act”, officially known as the Sunshine Protection Act, saying the twice-yearly clock change is “ridiculous” and “bad for crime”. “It is being held up by Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas for unknown reasons,” Trump wrote on October 2. “People are tired and annoyed by being forced to change the clocks twice a year.”
The House of Representatives voted in July to allow states to adopt year-round daylight saving time, but the legislation has not yet passed the Senate. In the new October 3 post, Trump again attacked Cotton, saying that “for some reason, Tom is stopping the bill” and attaching a letter from the Professional Golfers’ Association to Trump advocating for the legislation. Cotton, who is in the Senate leadership as chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, has opposed the move to permanent daylight saving time. In a speech on the Senate floor in October 2025, Cotton recalled that when Congress did this in 1974, “millions of Americans went to work and school in the dark”. He said permanent daylight saving time “would make winter a dark and bleak time again for millions of Americans” and “would push winter sunrises to an absurdly late hour, depriving Americans of the morning light that is essential for our safety and well-being”. When USA Today approached Cotton’s office for comment on Trump’s October 2 post, reporters were referred to that October 2025 speech.
