Edi Gathegi joins the cast of Joseph Kosinski’s ‘Miami Vice ’85’: he will play a small-time criminal with big ambitions
Edi Gathegi, the actor who won audiences’ hearts as Mr. Terrific in James Gunn’s ‘Superman’, has joined the cast of ‘Miami Vice ’85’, Universal Pictures’ famous remake directed by Joseph Kosinski, as ComingSoon.net reports, based on The Hollywood Reporter’s original news.
According to the outlet’s sources, Gathegi will play a small-time criminal with big ambitions who finds himself in deep waters — but the role, although seemingly secondary, will have a significant impact on the course of the story.
The actor joins an already star-studded cast: Michael B. Jordan will play Ricardo Tubbs, while Austin Butler will be James “Sonny” Crockett, the two undercover detectives at the centre of the story. Alongside them will be Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo and Andrew Schulz.
The film is set in mid-1980s Miami and explores the city’s glamour and corruption, inspired by the pilot episode and the first season of the classic television series. Kosinski, the director behind ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and ‘F1’, has given the project the dimension of a studio blockbuster, while the screenplay is based on Michael Mann’s work.
Filming is planned to begin in November, with scenes in New York and Miami, and the film will be shot for IMAX. The theatrical premiere is set for 19 May 2028, while the producer is Dylan Clark. For Gathegi, the engagement comes after his acclaimed role in ‘Superman’, which he will reprise in the sequel ‘Man of Tomorrow’ next year.
