General Staff: Russia has lost 1,537,390 troops in Ukraine since 24 February 2022 — 1,520 in the last day
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on 2 October that Russia has lost around 1,537,390 troops since the start of the invasion on 24 February 2022, according to The Kyiv Independent.
The figure includes 1,520 Russian losses over the last day. According to the General Staff, Russian equipment losses so far reach 12,388 tanks, 25,471 armoured combat vehicles, 156,309 vehicles and fuel tanks, and 50,592 artillery systems.
The balance also includes 2,175 multiple-launch rocket systems, 1,683 air-defence systems, 443 aircraft, 356 helicopters, 2,810 unmanned ground vehicles, 35 ships and boats and 2 submarines.
The Ukrainian General Staff has not disclosed its own losses for operational security reasons. Independent Western reports agree that Russian losses significantly exceed Ukrainian ones — the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimates the ratio at “approximately 2.5:1 or 2:1”.
According to a CSIS report from January 2026, Ukraine has suffered 500,000–600,000 losses from February 2022 to December 2025, of which 100,000–140,000 killed. President Volodymyr Zelensky told France TV on 4 February that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed, alongside a considerable number of missing.
