Protest in Copenhagen against Danish shipyard Fayard: it is repairing tankers carrying Russian LNG
A coalition of civil society organisations protested on 1 October in Copenhagen against the Danish shipyard Fayard, which continues to repair ships carrying Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG), as The Kyiv Independent reports.
Fayard is the last known shipyard in the European Union maintaining the specialised Arc7 tanker fleet, which exports LNG from the Russian Arctic.
“Fayard’s service to the LNG fleet is a stain on Danish support for Ukraine. We will keep pressuring Fayard to stop,” said Jens Alstrup, chairman of the NGO Freedom for Ukraine.
The shipyard is under scrutiny from NGOs, European lawmakers and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen herself. Since the end of June, Fayard has repaired four Russian LNG tankers; the fourth, Nikolay Yevgenov, was being repaired on 24 September, according to the German NGO Urgewald.
The EU has imposed a full ban on imports of Russian LNG from 1 January 2027, but failed to agree on a ban on maritime services that would make Fayard’s maintenance illegal — saying agreement within the G7 is needed.
“Enough. Denmark faces a growing security threat from Russia, while Fayard continues to repair the tankers that keep Russian Arctic LNG moving, while also serving Danish navy ships… This is a deep security contradiction. Fayard must immediately stop servicing the Arc7 fleet,” said Alexander Kirk, protest organiser from Urgewald.
