Gold Mine Collapses in Sudan, 82 Dead and 50 Injured

At least 82 people have lost their lives and 50 others have been injured after a gold mine collapsed in a remote area north of the city of al-Nuhud, in Sudan’s West Kordofan state.

The figures were released by a source within the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which controls the area, according to a recent provisional assessment of the disaster.

“An unspecified number of people remain trapped under the rubble and rescue operations are being carried out with rudimentary tools,” the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Since the start of the conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in April 2023, both sides have been financed mainly through the mining industry, besides support from foreign countries.

The war has devastated Sudan’s already fragile economy, where nearly 20 million people face acute food insecurity, according to recent UN estimates.
