General Staff: Russia has lost 1,538,950 troops in Ukraine since 24 February 2022 — 1,560 in the last day
Russia has lost around 1,538,950 troops in Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion on 24 February 2022, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced on Saturday (3 October 2026), as The Kyiv Independent reports. The figure includes 1,560 casualties suffered by Russian forces in the last day alone.
Equipment losses are also considerable: 12,391 tanks; 25,477 armoured fighting vehicles; 156,731 vehicles and fuel tankers; 50,637 artillery systems; 2,178 multiple-launch rocket systems; 1,683 air defence systems; 443 aircraft; 356 helicopters; 2,824 unmanned ground vehicles; 35 ships and boats; and two submarines.
The Ukrainian General Staff has not disclosed its own military losses, citing operational secrecy. However, independent Western analysts agree that Russian losses significantly exceed Ukrainian ones: the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimates the ratio at “around 2.5:1 or 2:1”.
A CSIS report from January 2026 says Ukraine likely suffered 500,000–600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025, of which 100,000–140,000 were killed in action. President Volodymyr Zelensky himself told France TV on 4 February that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in action since the start of the full-scale war.
The intensity of Russian drone attacks and fierce fighting has made it extremely difficult for Ukraine to recover its fallen troops from the battlefield — a necessary step for confirming identity through DNA.
