History in Augsburg: Kourbelis sinks Germany as unbeaten Greece top Nations League group

Greece made history tonight at Augsburg’s “WWK Arena,” beating Germany 1-0 in the second Group 2 match of UEFA Nations League A. The game’s only goal was scored by Dimitris Kourbelis in the 74th minute, as Novasports reports, with a strike from the edge of the box after a move built by Tzolis and a deflection off Kimmich that left the German goalkeeper with no chance.
Jürgen Klopp’s Germany dominated roughly the first 60 minutes but ran into a wall named Konstantinos Tzolakis. The Greek goalkeeper made three big saves, denying Adeyemi in the 31st and 49th minutes as well as Kimmich, while Adeyemi also squandered a one-on-one in the 20th minute, according to Sportradar data. The “Panzers” controlled the game but could not find a way through.
The win is of historic proportions: as pressaris.gr reports, Greece had never beaten Germany before — this is the first victory in history over the “Panzers.” A night that will be long remembered in Athens and across Greece.
With this success, Ivan Jovanović’s side make it 2 from 2 in the group, both away wins: after Serbia–Greece 1-2 in Belgrade on September 24, tonight came Germany–Greece 0-1. On 6 points, Greece sit alone at the top of the group and are targeting qualification for the Nations League quarterfinals.
For Jürgen Klopp, this was his first defeat as Germany coach. The match was officiated by English referee Chris Kavanagh. Greece now await their upcoming fixtures to seal their quarterfinal ticket.
