Industrial production falls 1.9 percent in August: mining down 10.1 percent, January–August index at 100.6

North Macedonia’s industrial production shrank by 1.9 percent in August 2026 compared with the same month of 2025, according to data from the State Statistical Office (DZS), as Meta reports. The fall comes after a July with modest growth, returning the sector to negative territory.

The heaviest blow was recorded in the “Mining and quarrying” sector, where production fell by 10.1 percent compared with August 2025. Manufacturing, which accounts for the overwhelming share of industrial production, fell by 1.3 percent, while the “Electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply” sector rose by 0.8 percent, Meta reports, citing the official statistics.

The fall in manufacturing, as Meta reports, is mainly the result of lower production in the following branches: manufacture of wearing apparel, manufacture of chemicals and chemical products, manufacture of rubber and plastic products, manufacture of basic metals, manufacture of electrical equipment, manufacture of machinery and equipment, and manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers.

By main industrial groupings, August 2026 recorded falls in Energy, down 6.5 percent, Intermediate goods (excluding energy), down 4.0 percent, and Capital goods, down 8.9 percent, while growth was recorded in Durable consumer goods, up 5.0 percent, and Non-durable consumer goods, up 7.0 percent. The industrial production index for the January–August 2026 period, compared with the same period of 2025, stands at 100.6.
