Jared Young taken to hospital after collision with Nolan McLean

Jared Young, the New York Mets’ first baseman, left the game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday on a stretcher after a collision with Phillies pitcher Nolan McLean. According to team announcements, Young was then taken to hospital for further examinations; he has sensitivity in his extremities, while a CT scan showed no immediate abnormalities. Interim Mets manager Andy Green said the player is showing concussion symptoms.

According to Bleacher Report, the incident happened in the sixth inning, when Justin Crawford hit a ground ball toward first base. As McLean tried to cover the base, his legs appeared to collide with the head of Young, who was bending to field the ball. After leaving the game, Young was replaced in the lineup by Mark Vientos.

Young has been one of the bright spots of the season for the Mets, even though he was thrust into a key depth role in 2024 and had played only 44 MLB games before this year. Thursday was his 103rd appearance of the season; so far he has recorded nine home runs, 17 doubles and 39 RBIs, with a .266/.330/.429 slash line. He has shown particular form against right-handed pitchers, holding an OPS of around .797 in 250 at-bats, and the bench bosses have praised him for his effort and professionalism.
