Kroser: The Berlin Process Is the Driving Force of the Western Balkans’ EU Integration

At the meeting of interior ministers of the Berlin Process, held in Montenegro, German State Secretary of the Interior Bernd Kroser described the Berlin Process as the driving force of the Western Balkans’ European integration. According to him, the current wave of enlargement is seriously threatened by organized crime, human smuggling and illegal migration.

“They are trying to destroy our democracy, unsettle our public and bring insecurity into our state systems,” Kroser said, warning that these threats target the very foundations of the democratic order in Europe.

The region’s interior ministers discussed at the meeting the joint fight against organized crime and irregular migration, aiming to strengthen regional cooperation and closer coordination among security agencies. Montenegro’s Interior Minister Danilo Šaranović also spoke at the meeting.

The Berlin Process remains one of the main political formats for bringing the Western Balkan countries closer to the European Union, while the meetings of interior ministers serve to harmonize efforts in the field of security and the rule of law.
