MLB 2026 playoff predictions on the eve of the final week of the regular season
Seven days remain until the Major League Baseball playoff picture for the 2026 season is officially set. Six teams have already secured participation, but no position is fully locked, and the American League side remains particularly open with several movable spots and reservation-swap possibilities.
As Bleacher Report reports, possible collapses in the top spots will be decided by tiebreaker rules: in the AL East, Tampa Bay leads New York 6-3 with four head-to-head games remaining; in the AL Central, Chicago has won 7-6 against Cleveland; in the AL West, Houston has a 9-4 advantage over Texas. In the National League, Los Angeles would lose any tiebreaker against Atlanta or Milwaukee, while Atlanta and Milwaukee have split 3-3 and are currently 32-17 against their respective division teams. For the wild-card spots, Chicago is favored over Philadelphia, San Diego, and Arizona in tie scenarios; Philadelphia has won all matchups against San Diego 6-0 but would be at a disadvantage against Arizona due to the Diamondbacks’ better record within their division. In the race for the 6th AL spot, there are many possible combinations: Houston and Toronto share 3 wins in head-to-head matchups and the tiebreaker remains unresolved, while the second tiebreaker rule is based on the better record within the division and, if needed, the better record within the American League. If all six teams fighting for the 6th spot finish 81-81, then Houston would be number 2, Chicago number 3, and Texas number 6, per current tiebreakers.
In the AL East, the current standings show Tampa Bay at 95-60 as number 1 for now, the New York Yankees at 89-66 (6 games behind), and Boston at 84-72. The most likely forecast is that Tampa Bay keeps first place, New York closes as number 4, and Boston takes number 5. Toronto and Baltimore will fight for the last possible spot and their direct series, where a sweep would most likely decide the 6th-place winner, but the probability of a dramatic turnaround is low given season trends.
In the AL Central, Cleveland is at 81-75 and the Chicago White Sox at 80-76. The White Sox have had a dip in form since late August and have gone 8-13 since Aug. 30, but still remain in play for a playoff spot. Our prediction is Cleveland as number 2 and Chicago rising as number 6, taking one of the last spots in the field.
In the AL West, Texas is 78-78, Houston 77-79, and Seattle 73-83. The Rangers have been average all season and are prone to continuing to be able to fight for a postseason spot, but we predict Houston to finish as number 3.
In the National League, the Atlanta Braves (92-64) have secured the division and are expected to keep a high spot; Philadelphia (86-70) is trying to improve its ranking to get some home-field advantage. Our assessment for the end of the week is Atlanta as number 3 and Philadelphia as number 6.
In the NL Central, Milwaukee is 98-58 and has secured the division’s first place, while the Chicago Cubs remain in contention to take a favorable wild-card position. Next week’s latest forecast puts Milwaukee as number 1 and Chicago as number 4.
In short, much can change during this final week: tiebreakers and recent performances will determine the October lineup. A more detailed October forecast is expected again after this week’s games conclude once the dust settles. According to Bleacher Report, after these developments clearer conclusions will emerge about the final standings and the playoff bracket.
