Montenegro adopts new hunting season rules

Montenegro’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management adopted in September 2026 a new regulation on hunting seasons which, according to the ministry, was drafted on the basis of scientific and professional principles, the biological characteristics of species, and the practices of European countries.
The ministry stresses that the goal of the regulation is not to endanger wild animal numbers, but the sustainable management of populations, preserving their health and improving their genetic and phenotypic characteristics.
For the first time, hunting seasons have been clearly defined for all categories of deer, roe deer, wild goat, and mouflon, while for some species the periods have been adapted to biological characteristics, climate conditions, and their migration, as well as to the need to protect agriculture and forests.
The ministry explains that quotas and hunting days will be set in a planned manner, based on professional criteria and habitat capacity.
The new regulation also brings changes to permitted hunting days, including the possibility of hunting on Saturdays and on holidays.
However, the ministry notes that Montenegro remains among the European countries with the fewest hunting days per season.
They also warn that illegal hunting, exceeding permitted quotas, or any other violation of the rules will be considered unacceptable, and that institutions will support enforcement of the law on the protection of fauna and natural resources.
