NBC News Poll: Trump’s Approval Falls to 41%, 55% of Voters Say He Has Damaged the Economy
U.S. President Donald Trump
U.S. President Donald Trump’s approval has fallen to the lowest point of his second term — just 41 percent among registered voters — according to a new NBC News poll published on September 20.
According to the poll, 55 percent of voters say Trump’s policies have damaged the economy, compared with 48 percent in March. The cost of living remains the most pressing concern for Americans, a little more than a year ahead of the midterm elections.
NBC pollsters note that the war with Iran has pushed up fuel prices and other costs for American families; more than six in ten voters say the war with Iran was not worth it.
In the race for control of Congress, Democrats lead 50 to 45 percent, but that is markedly narrower than the 12-point advantage they held at this point in the 2018 cycle. Meanwhile, Republicans trail Democrats on inflation (31 to 38 percent) and the economy (38 to 39 percent).
Democrats are also viewed negatively by voters: 36 percent have a positive view of Republicans (49 percent negative), while for Democrats the figures are 29 percent positive and 50 percent negative. Democrats are targeting Senate seats in redder states such as Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, North Carolina, Ohio and Texas, and hope to retake the House of Representatives.
Methodology: the poll surveyed 1,000 registered voters, by phone and online, during September 11-15, with a margin of error of ±3 percentage points.
