October 6 is approaching, still no agreement on the president
Only three days remain until the end of the constitutional deadline for electing the president of the Republic of Kosovo, while the parliamentary political parties are continuing their efforts to find an agreement on this issue.
Meanwhile, yesterday’s political developments focused on the meetings between the party leaders, although their efforts did not yet bring an agreement on the president.
The leader of Vetëvendosje, Albin Kurti, on Saturday held separate meetings with the leaders of the two largest opposition parties, Bedri Hamza of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) and Lumir Abdixhiku of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK).
Alongside the president issue, the PDK is insisting that by 6 October the Assembly of Kosovo also adopt, in two readings, the Draft Law on amending the Law on the Specialist Chambers.
According to the deadline set by the Constitutional Court, the process for electing the new president must be completed by 6 October.
Kosovo, in the last two years, has held three rounds of elections in Kosovo. All three of these processes were parliamentary elections for the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo, KosovaPress reports.
The elections of 9 February 2025 did not result in the formation of a government, while the second elections, on 28 December 2025, ended in an institutional deadlock over the election of a president and ultimately in the dissolution of parliament in April. As a consequence, the third elections were also held on 7 June 2026.
Meanwhile, in a judgment of 23 September, the Constitutional Court of Kosovo clarified that the 60-day deadline for electing the president began on 8 August, from the day the Assembly was constituted, and ends on 6 October.
The country risks going to elections again by 15 November if the president is not elected by 6 October. /kp/
