“Our time is running out!” — Former Google researcher sounds the alarm on Artificial Intelligence: AI could kill us all

Another artificial intelligence expert who warned the technology could “kill all humans” became a former Google DeepMind researcher on Monday, arguing that the time to prevent this from happening may run out.

Public concern about the potential risks of artificial intelligence has grown after Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon revealed he resigned, in part, because “the people building artificial intelligence sincerely believe it could kill us all by the end of the decade.”

Anthropic scientist Evan Hubinger then commented on Coxon’s statements, saying he was right and estimating there is more than a 10% chance that AI leads to the extinction of all humanity within the next decade.

Bilal Chughtai, who announced via platform X his departure from Google DeepMind, followed suit.

“I recently resigned from Google DeepMind, where I worked on research on the safety and alignment of artificial general intelligence (AGI),” he wrote, adding:

“I sincerely believe AI has the potential to kill us all and that we may run out of time to prevent this.”

Warnings about the AI “race”

The latest warnings come at a time when voices are growing within the industry itself about the risks of uncontrolled development of ever more powerful systems.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has recently argued for slowing the pace of development of advanced AI systems.

His position has received unusual support from Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, sparking a new debate about so-called “AI doomerism,” the view that uncontrolled AI development could lead to catastrophic consequences for humanity.

Chughtai argued that safe AI development is possible, but will require coordination among companies.

“We need to avoid this insane race among AI companies,” he said, adding: “We need to pace AI development at a speed society can handle, so that new risks can be addressed before extreme harm occurs.”

However, U.S. President Donald Trump has dismissed the warnings, calling the AI industry’s call for regulation a “scam” in a Truth Social post.
