Zack Snyder says it openly: he will never watch James Gunn’s “Superman” — “it’s personal”

Zack Snyder has closed the door on James Gunn’s DC universe. Asked by Josh Horowitz on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast whether he has seen “Superman,” “Supergirl” or “Lanterns,” the director answered “No” — and explained the decision as a personal, not creative, matter: “It’s just personal for me… I want them to succeed,” adding that the reasons “are loaded with a lot of baggage.” Snyder admitted he hasn’t fully escaped the DCU: clips and memes constantly reach him — “they’re all over my X feed,” he said.

Context: Snyder was the architect of the original DCEU, which began with “Man of Steel” (2013), “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” (2016) and “Justice League” (2017; his full version came out in 2021). The DCEU closed in 2023 and direction was handed to James Gunn and Peter Safran, who launched the new DCU with “Superman” (2025), which earned $618 million worldwide. The new statement is a notable shift: earlier this year, on the same podcast, Snyder had called Gunn’s film “amazing,” while he recently told The Hollywood Reporter he “hasn’t gotten around to watching it yet.”

Other details emerged from the same interview: Snyder confirmed he had considered Jeffrey Dean Morgan for the role of Batman in a “Flashpoint” project and that Zoe Saldaña was nearly cast as Lois Lane in “Man of Steel.” He also said he aims to direct episodes of the “300” prequel series, while the “Sucker Punch” director’s cut is “definitely on the agenda” amid the Paramount–WBD merger.

Snyder is currently promoting “The Last Photograph,” his first fully independent film, with no studio or platform behind it.
