Rožaje: Bosniak Party councillors turn against their own municipal mayor
An unusual political situation has arisen in the Municipality of Rožaje, where councillors of the Bosniak Party (BS) — the party that holds absolute power in this Montenegrin municipality — have refused to support the proposal of the municipal mayor, who comes from the ranks of the same party, for the construction of a road, as television Vijesti reports in its September 27 evening edition.
According to Vijesti’s reporting, the BS councillors demanded the removal of this item from the session’s agenda, in practice blocking the initiative of the head of the municipality. This is an unusual development: it rarely happens that councillors of the ruling party vote against a proposal of the municipal mayor who comes from the same party.
It remains unclear whether the reasons for this stance are procedural in nature or whether a deeper disagreement hides behind it within the ranks of the Bosniak Party, television Vijesti emphasizes.
The development has prompted the reaction of the opposition in Rožaje, which commented on this situation in the segment broadcast by Vijesti, seeing it as a sign of cracks within the governing majority in the municipality.
It remains to be seen whether this stance of the BS councillors will be repeated in future sessions of the Municipal Council and what the consequences will be for the functioning of local power in Rožaje.
