Serbian Students Launch Election Bicycle Tour: Two Groups From Belgrade to Cross Dozens of Cities in 10 Days

A group of students in Serbia set off today on a major 10-day election bicycle tour across the country. As part of the Student List’s campaign for the October 25 parliamentary elections, two groups of cyclists will visit towns and settlements from Subotica in the north to Vranje in the south.

Student Mihajlo Jovanović told N1 before departing from Republic Square in Belgrade that the action was chosen for logistical reasons, as on two wheels they move faster and can pass through almost all of Serbia’s settlements within ten days.

“To cover as much ground as possible and for as many citizens as possible to hear about us. But not only to hear — also to see us, to be able to greet us, to take hope in the sense of seeing that we truly exist, that we are not just some kids from Instagram, some kids from television and so on, but that we are truly people, students, who are ready to make changes in this country,” Mihajlo said.

Two bicycle tours set off from Belgrade — one heading north, the other south — which will eventually meet in Kragujevac, student Laura Živić explained to N1. She said her northern tour passes through Vojvodina and Mačva: Vršac, Zrenjanin, Kikinda, Subotica, Sombor, Novi Sad, Šabac, Loznica, Lazarevac and finally Kragujevac.

“In Kragujevac we will meet symbolically with the other group, the southern tour. Why Kragujevac exactly? Because there the first Serbian Constitution was adopted, and we as guardians of the Constitution — as this bicycle tour is also called — considered it the best place for that great symbolic gathering,” Laura said.

She added that Serbia’s Constitution, under this government, is constantly violated, and that the highest legal document must be made accessible to all citizens of the Republic. The students will carry three copies of the Constitution with them — because the Student List appears on the ballot under number 3.

According to the students, the number of participants in the tour, together with those who will join along the way, is expected to be around 250 people.
