Srdanović (Student List): I’m proud they chose me — I’m just the first among equals

Ilija Srdanović, cardiologist and professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Novi Sad, who holds first place on the “Studentska lista – Studenti pobeđuju” (Student List – Students Win) list for the snap parliamentary elections of October 25, said on Tuesday evening that he is proud of the trust the students placed in him, but that he sees himself “only as the first among equals”.

In a statement to the Nova.rs portal, Srdanović said that the medical profession will not be neglected because of politics. “I am proud that the students chose me and all the names on their list, but I must emphasize that I consider myself only the first among equals,” he said.

He announced that he has held several discussions with the students, but will inform the public in due course about his further role and the list’s plans. “For the moment we are publishing the main points of the 11-point program, and we will decide everything else in time,” the professor said.

Responding to ironic comments in part of public opinion that “we will lose a good doctor and may gain a bad politician”, Srdanović said: “How it will be in politics, we will see; we don’t talk about this in advance. And I want to tell everyone that I will not give up my work as a doctor, nor my patients. I will continue to practice my profession and heal people, and time and space will be found for everything.”
