Jordan Staal Signs One-Year Deal with Hurricanes Worth Up to $10 Million

Jordan Staal, the 38-year-old captain of the Carolina Hurricanes, has signed a one-year contract that could reach $10 million in value. The new deal keeps him with the team for the 2027-28 season and continues his role as the club’s leader.

According to the NHL, the contract includes a base salary of $900,000, a $4 million signing bonus and up to $5.1 million in performance bonuses.

Last season Staal recorded 36 points in 75 regular-season games (20 goals, 16 assists). In the playoffs he contributed 12 points in 19 games (8 goals, 4 assists), leading the Hurricanes to the second title in club history and winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the postseason for his playoff performance.

Selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins with the second pick in the 2006 draft, Staal has recorded 747 points in 1,403 regular-season games (318 goals, 429 assists) and 85 points in 181 playoff games (46 goals, 39 assists), including winning the Stanley Cup with the Penguins in 2009. He was traded to Carolina on June 22, 2012, and has worn the captain’s “C” since 2019; in Hurricanes history Staal ranks second in games played (972), fourth in assists (301) and fifth in points (499).

The NHL also announced the signing of the contract.
