Support rally in Bežanijska kosa for councilor Tanja Mićić: “We know justice is not the same for everyone”
On Monday evening, the support rally “Tanja ne laže” (Tanja does not lie) was held in Belgrade’s Bežanijska kosa neighborhood, organized in solidarity with “Kreni-promeni” movement councilor Tanja Mićić, who claims she was attacked on Sunday evening by Belgrade mayor Aleksandar Šapić, who broke her nose, as Danas reports.
The rally’s main speaker was Sarah El Sarag, a lawyer and candidate of the Student List, who, according to N1’s reporting, addressed those present with the message: “For the ordinary person there is detention, arrests, media hunts… but when it comes to those in power there is a press conference. That is why we do not ask whether the law exists, but for whom it applies.”
El Sarag stressed that “women are not divided into ours and theirs, the suitable and the unsuitable,” and that “every woman has the right to be safe on the street, at work, in an institution.” “A woman has a broken nose and stands as proof that between words and reality there stands a wall of hypocrisy,” she told the crowd.
“We know justice is not the same for everyone,” El Sarag concluded, calling on the institutions to make the law apply equally to every citizen.
Meanwhile, mayor Šapić denies the attack and says he defended himself against verbal and physical attacks by Mićić and her husband; the “Kreni-promeni” movement has filed a criminal complaint against him, the prosecution has ordered interviews with those involved, while Šapić tested negative for alcohol and psychoactive substances.
