Vučić condemns violence after clash between SNS activists and citizens in Novi Sad
Last evening, a clash broke out near the Futog market in Novi Sad between activists of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and citizens, as the Nova.rs portal reports. Tensions began when SNS parliamentary candidate Vukašin Đoković tried to snatch the “Students Win” flag from supporters of the student list, after which the situation escalated into physical violence.
According to Nova.rs’s reporting, at one point a man from one of the two groups was seen punching a woman, who is believed to be an SNS sympathizer. Footage of the incident has been widely shared on social media.
After the incident, the head of the “Aleksandar Vučić – United Serbia” list, Aleksandar Vučić, also reacted, condemning the violence on the streets of Novi Sad in an Instagram post. “The violence being carried out by the blockaders, especially against women, is shameful and horrific. I call on our supporters not to respond in kind, but to calmly bring the campaign to its end and convincingly defeat the bandits,” he wrote, according to Nova.rs’s reporting.
The incident comes in the middle of the election campaign, as Serbia’s snap parliamentary elections are held on October 25.
